What to do in the Garden in September

Take advantage of the cooler temperatures and do some planting.
  • If you live in Zone 3 or higher, add lettuce, spinach, radishes, kale or other cool-season crops that take less than 55 days to reach harvest.
  • Now is good time to plant wildflowers. Native wildflowers are easy to grow, low-maintenance, and perennial, and growing them is the best way to support pollinators. Prepare the soil, sow the seeds, and provide adequate water and care for their growth. Check out Northern Wildflowers, www.northernwildflowers.ca, for over 70 varieties of native wildflower seed varieties as well as custom seed mixes.
  • Find perennials, shrubs and trees on clearance sales and add them into your landscape. Make sure you loosen the roots of the plant when you take it out of the pot so the plant can start growing once it gets into the soil.
  • Prepare for a vibrant spring display by planting bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and crocuses in this month. Follow planting depth and spacing guidelines for each variety, and look forward to colourful blooms next year.
