Water Wise

Simple ways to conserve water in the home.

With climate change causing hotter and drier conditions, the future of water availability becomes increasingly uncertain. While corporations must contribute to water conservation efforts, individual citizens can also play a significant role. Each drop of water saved today can be utilized in the future, and collectively, our individual efforts can make a substantial impact.

One practical approach is to capture water in the kitchen throughout the day. As you do your daily tasks, such as washing vegetables, use a water bowl in the sink.

After washing one batch of vegetables, continue using that same water for subsequent batches. Instead of letting it go down the drain, pour the water into a bucket stored where it won’t spill. Similarly, direct the water from the bowl into the bucket when soaking and rinsing beans. Even actions like rinsing your hands or cleaning out a pot can contribute to the water collection in the bucket. You can even save water from your pet’s stale water bowl.

Once the bucket reaches about half-full without becoming too heavy, take it outside to water your plants. If you don’t have a yard, you can use this collected water for your indoor plants or even to flush your toilet using the grey water system.

Implementing this simple trick can save more than 10 litres of water daily.
