Today, as the cool autumn air brings that “back-to-school” feeling, with its sense of new beginnings, I am proposing a new way of birding. A new way of interpreting and understanding events while bringing self-awareness and a reconnection with the person you always knew you were.
For many of us, birding can be the missing link to improving our life and outlook, while manifesting success in ways we’ve only dreamed of. Ask yourself, what is it that draws so many people to birds? Aside from their beautiful colors and differing songs, I would submit that it’s seeing a bird’s focus, independence and determination that triggers an itch or craving to be more focused and independent ourselves.
So how does the shift I am proposing work? Instead of being the one who reacts, be the one who observes the actions and interactions between nature and the birds. Let your observations guide and direct your thoughts and purpose. Internalize those observed behaviors you find appealing and begin to be more like that bird. Building a solid foundation by narrowing your focus and giving the time needed to those things that matter most.
By watching the birds and internalizing their unquestioning belief and self-reliance, we can begin to hear the rhythms of our own soul. If you believe, like I do, that we are all connected by a single source or spirit, then it follows that the traits we see in birds — their independence, trust, belief and intention — are also embedded within us. However, we possess a much more complex brain, and with that complexity, we can overthink and even self-sabotage our true purpose. By getting out into nature, calming our mind and internalizing those qualities we admire in birds, we can begin to build a life that is more reflective of our true purpose.
Birds are not just creatures of habit; they’re teachers, and guides in the subtle art of living. When we observe birds, we see their incredible focus, dedication, and the inherent joy they take in the simplest acts of life. They build nests with precision, they sing without holding back, and they fly with unwavering determination. They show us the beauty of being present in the moment, the power of instinct, and the grace of letting go. By stepping back, detaching and becoming the observer, we can begin to see things differently, or perhaps see them for what they truly are. When we begin watching the birds with purpose, we begin to understand ourselves better and awaken to greater self-awareness and self-reliance.

Enjoy the birds, enjoy nature and appreciate the world that surrounds us. Recognize the birds for what they are and see how they can help you process feelings and tasks that serve you best. Take the time to sit quietly in nature and calm your mind. Watch the birds and hear your inner voice calling to you. Then, like that bird, trust and take flight. And begin building your new life, one purposeful day at a time. Once you do, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
