Harrowsmith Summer

Practical tips to help you embrace the season.

Boys of Summer

Our theme for this issue is “Celebrating Family Farms,” and when it comes to family, goats are the GOAT. Just like humans, they thrive on social interaction and companionship, finding solace and joy in the company of their fellow caprine friends.

Five Fun Facts about GOATS!

  1. Goats have rectangular pupils, which give them a wide field of vision (320 to 340 degrees, compared with humans, who have 160 to 210) and allow them to see predators approaching from behind without having to turn their heads. (They are also said to have excellent night vision.)
  2. Each goat has its own distinct “bleat,” which is their way of communicating with each other.
  3. Goats have excellent memories and can remember complex paths and locations of food sources for several years.
  4. Goats were one of the first animals to be tamed by humans and were domesticated more than 10,000 years ago.
  5. Goat meat is the most consumed meat per capita worldwide.

Rooting for the Future

National Tree Day may not be until September 24 2025 (always the Wednesday during National Tree Week), but that doesn’t mean our friends at Forests Ontario are taking the summer off. Along with local partners, they have planted millions of trees in communities across the province, providing important wildlife habitats, boosting biodiversity, improving soil quality and helping to clean the air we breathe and water we drink. Green is the New White

From vintage dresses to recycled stationery, eco-weddings are on the rise. At Harrowsmith, we want to help spread the word about all of the amazing planet-friendly wedding resorts we have in Canada, so if you know a venue, please send an email to editor@harrowsmithmag.com. And keep your eyes out for our “Glamping Wedding” story coming soon!
