While many (some might say “clever”) Canadians head south for the winter, some of us choose to adapt. For example, according to our friends at wwf.ca,
“Chickadees grow an insulating layer of feathers as the weather gets colder, and an Arctic fox will change its fur colour from brown to white to better blend into its snowy surroundings.”

WINTER WOES
According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), about 60 percent of people living in Canada report feeling the “winter blues.” (The third Monday in January is dubbed, “Blue Monday” for good reason.)
Experts say the combination of frigid temperatures, shorter days and post-holiday bills can lead to sadness and fatigue during our coldest season.
So, what can we do?
- Proper sleep,
- eating well,
- physical activity and
- getting outside (especially on sunny days!) are the best ways to offset —or even avoid—feeling blah.
To really amp up your effort, add in a dash of pet power: Many studies suggest that caring for a furry friend can also boost moods and lower anxiety.

Please note: If you are feeling seriously depressed, you can get help by dialing 9-9-8, CAMH’s 24-7 hotline.
