The traditional Indigenous People of Turtle Island acknowledge the teachings of the 13 Grandmother
Moons and according to those teachings, the 11th moon is known as the Freezing Moon/Frost Moon. It’s a period when all creatures should be prepared to sustain the coldest stretch, traditionally times with
a scarcity of food and a need to prepare our spiritual path to sustain us through these darker, colder
days and nights.
Some also refer to tonight’s full moon as the Beaver Moon Named after the beavers’ nocturnal activity of building dams before winter sets in, the beaver moon signifies industriousness and preparation. Trappers would also set their beaver traps before the swamps and rivers froze, ensuring a supply of warm furs for the winter months.
In Celtic tradition, it is also called the Mourning Moon and the Darkest Depths Moon.
The time of the full moon is 9:19am EDT.
